For my Gierburg setting I am collecting figures from all kinds of periods and manufacturers. The styles range from medieval to something like English Civil War; one big inspiration is the
Brotherhood of the Wolf film. In this post I list all the figures suitable for the game, which I came across on the internet, thus making this a mix between a massive 'to buy' list, style guide and a source of inspiration.

ReplyDeleteBut... NO BS 'Governor's daughter'???
Hasslefree Barwench, strumpet... would fit.
Since 'Brotherhood of the Wolf' is a major part of your inspiration, some lesser known minis 'with tricorne':
- Hasslefree Pirate Captain;
- Eureka Pirate Ladies (the cutest is also sold by Irregular minis as PS19 / PS21);
- Foundry female Revenant Elves do have a 18th C. 'look';
- Fenryll 'chasseur de sorcière', Flying Frog minis for 'A Touch of Evil'...;
- Valiant (Magnificent Egos) Pilgrim & Pilgrim reincarnated;
- Enigma Katherine;
- Black Hat (Cobalt) Female Duellist (sic)...
Cheers!
Thanks a lot for the input, abdul666! I remember seeing your threads over at LAF.
ReplyDeleteYes, the Governor's Daughter... I think I unintentionally left her out because she's much "more" than a civilian, yet not a proper fightin' gang member. And maybe because I have two unpainted copies (1 resin, 1 metal) of her already... ;) Nevertheless, she definately belongs in the list!
The strumpet is a good catch. She's actually in a different category which is not yet included at all: 'The Syr' (a gypsy kind of gang).
Looks like Galloping Major's upcoming FIW AAC3 Anglo-American Settlers Defending Command & Characters pack will have a number of suitable minis. Two of their 'Soldiers Free' characters are also quite nice.
I also just realized that I completely forgot to include Versper-On's Carnevale minis. D'OH!
Will have to update the list right now. :)
Cheers!
- Warlord Games also have armed settlers (and a pair of jesuits).
ReplyDelete- Historically a little later, but West Wind 'Headless Horseman' range includes suitable minis; gypsies, armed priests and monks in other 'Vampire Wars' ranges, and even some 'thralls' for Victorian EotD would not look out of place.
- Rattrap had a 'Characters of Gévaudan' set -don't know about its current availability, and the slouched hats look more '3 Musketeers' than 'Lacepulp' (conversion?).
- Moonlight Minis do offer (¿?) a few potential 'living' characters.
- Micro art Sudios Esme is in 18th C. costume, but unfortunately the Discworld minis are reportedly close to 36mm?
- Oh, and I forgot Fiendish Fabrication 'Mother Mutton' ^-^
For the gypsies / spies GW plague cart could be converted (with plumes / feathers added to the horses & the 4 corners of the wagon - and another driver!) to a kind of 'mobile theatre'; a goof excuse to use Fantasy 'bards', more generally dancers, musicians and singers in 'outfashioned' / 'exotic' / skimpy costumes (what about -slightly converted- Fantasy Football cheerleaders?).
Now, as demonstrated with "Gerrard, Bondsmen Leader", the mere addition of a tricorne does marvels to 'tag' a miniature '18th C.'; applies not only to males, but potentially to many 'female fighers' (Darksword, Reaper...). Wargames Factory 'War of Spanish Succession' plastic sets are an abundant and -relatively- inexpensive source of tricornes & other accessories.
Hi again,
ReplyDeletecool stuff! Thanks for all the interesting links. I hadn't seen the Characters of Gévaudan for Gloire before. I'll definately put them on the list.
I recently watched The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus. That too totally reminded me of the Mordheim Carnival of Chaos Plague Cart.
One big issue for me is that the figures must not only match in style/theme but also in quality. If you have e.g. Dark Sword and Black Scorpion minis on one hand then you can hardly combine those with... erm... Old Glory or Blue Moon. So yeah, I am a bit picky. :)
I fully understand: I prefer to have female minis (at least those supposed to be comely / cute) better sculpted than male ones; major characters better sculpted than hirelings; noble duelists better sculpted than tavern brawlers... Badly sculpts minis are often bulky, and thus suggest brute strength but certainly not bright intelligence (re. the Foundry SYW Gardes Françaises who look more orcish than human).
ReplyDeleteHence the variable quality of sculpt / anatomical correctness of style, instead of being an embarrassment, could be used as a playing aid reflecting both the IQ / education / sophistication of the character AND his / her social status / rank in the hierarchy of the 'gang'. Within limits of course, to work it has to stay at almost subliminal level.
That's a totally interesting take on the issue. With a beautiful paint job being capable of pulling the best out of any figure this may indeed work in some occasions. I guess a problem (for me) is that usually less experly sculpted figures are also often presented with a suitably "medium" quality paint job. If all figures get an equally talented brush treatment things may be evened out a lot.
